LT William Lewis served his country during WWII as a fighter pilot. During
a raid, he was shot down on September 11, 1944. He was killed but never recovered by Allied Forces and was listed missing
in action. He was survived by his wife and six month old daughter.
In 2001, his daughter launched a search on the internet to find any information
on her father. She came in contact with a Chech who knew a man in former East Germany who had been caring for a grave
of a man he found in plane wreckege and took the responsibility of burying him. After 3 years of tests and negotiations, LT
Lewis' remains were identified and brought home for the first time in nearly 60 years.
He was laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery in his home town of Tulsa
on Friday May 28th, 2004. Luke and I went to visit his grave on the following Thursday.
